This smelled like bullshit. Elliot had known JD for a few years now, and there were a few things you could count on with him. Number 1: JD didn’t wear sweats. Number 2: JD would do literally anything to get out of lifting his wand or a finger. Number 3: JD could (and would) make literally anything about himself. Raising money for charity, where there was no one around to see it and subsequently heap praise on JD, did not gel with rules two and three. Elliot was supposed to believe that JD was raising money out of the goodness of his heart and then anonymously donating it? Unlikely.
“Do you like to help people, Elliot?”
Elliot barely resisted rolling his eyes. Yes, of course he liked helping people, unless he was being asked to do something really boring. He just didn’t get asked to help people very often in real life. Most people in his real life had their shit sorted out already, he guessed, or just decided to ask other people for help, which was fine with Elliot. But you never said no when someone asked you for help in a game, because then you missed out on the side quests and the loot.
JD wasn’t asking Elliot to do something boring, but this seemed like it would lead to a very weird side quest. “Sure,” he said with a shrug. “Which people are you helping? Are you saving the orphans? Teaching whales to read? Curing syphilis?”
